Tips on SEO keywords, for freelance writers to consider when writing online.

Are you a new freelance writer and finding ways to earn money online? Then it is important that you familiarise yourself with online writing strategies in terms of SEO keywords or choosing the right keywords. For seasoned writers, a need to remind ourselves of the ever-present influence of search engine optimisation (SEO) in our keywords must not be overlooked, whether we write from the heart or not. Unless of course we want to give our writer’s time and creativity freely.

What are ‘keywords’?  Keywords are the words that readers use to find articles. As much as possible, they must be naturally used throughout an article. It is therefore important to understand what keywords are, and how they are placed in the article.

Keywords and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Experienced online writers who are successful realise the importance of keywords and how they are used in the article content. They know how to work out and select keywords to translate them into words that earn money. Writing sites pay differently, that is, a writer can get paid online in various ways. Three of the most common ones are:  residual payment based on advert revenue, residual  payment based on page views (PVs), and upfront payment.

1.  Residual payment based on ad revenue – Writers earn revenue each time a reader clicks on an ad. New online writers may be tempted to click on the ads or encourage relatives and friends to do the same. Be warned! Do not click on ads nor encourage or suggest your readers to do so.  Some well-meaning relatives may think that they are helping you; the opposite is true. This is the fastest way to get your account suspended. Google in its Adsense program  is best known for this. The sad part is you won’t even find out the reason why you got suspended.

2.  Residual payment based on page views - Simply, the more page views your article gets, the more you make money. You need to learn how to attract more traffic to your articles through the use of website performance analysis and other Google tools.

3.  Upfront payment – With upfront pay, as a writer you earn X dollars for writing an article containing Y amount of words. As the term “upfront” implies, the amount is agreed upfront before you accept the writing assignment along with other requirements from your client.

Residual Payment versus Upfront Payment

Although finding keywords for a site that pays on ad revenue is not necessarily the same as choosing keywords for sites that pays on page view,  with residual paying sites, it is up to you as the writer to select the keywords. In writing for upfront payment contract, your client usually chooses the article topic and therefore the keywords to use. All you need to do as the writer is to follow your client’s instructions.

Keywords SEO and Advertisers

By advertising, advertisers encourage or persuade the readers to drive them to the products or services they are offering. Advertisers seek to generate increased use of their products and/or services. They also want to advertise on articles for which readers are interested as this increases the possibility of driving traffic to their site, as relates the reader’s need or notice. Using the right keywords on an article determines the advertisers that will place adverts on.

As relates to advertising, keywords can be classified into two:  lucrative keyword and popular keyword.

  • Lucrative keywords are those words for which advertisers are willing to pay well or on a premium often found in financial institutions and banking as they are willing to pay high adverts for their products and services.
  • Popular keywords are those words that are often searched but are not high paying. Recipe articles usually belong to this keyword category, that is, not high paying unlike bank products or services.

This article provides an understanding of keywords targeting strategy that will help guide you, as online writer, gain lead generation through search engines. By being ranked high with SEs, your online articles will gain more traffic, which is important for a successful search engine optimisation.

List Your Things-To-Do that Matter Most

Time Management:  Your important to-do list

It’s been a very challenging four weeks off- and online.  There’s no other way but cook up something to make things better, and as an old adage keeps nagging, “No use crying over spilt milk.” True, we learn a lot from experience, including when the chips are down, we know too who our friends are and who are not. C’est la vie.

The To-do List, Now! is a challenge especially for confirmed procrastinators. We are all guilty of procrastinating one way or another. Each of us needs to come up with our own list, something clear that can be acted upon – if we are really serious about it, and to make the list to our utmost best.

Below is a list personally chosen so consider the entries as suggestions. You have your own, but I think that somewhere within the list, we have similar needs, and therefore, common tasks to follow through.

1.  Practice gratefulness.

Write down or think of your blessings, big or small and be grateful for them.

2.  Write our three most important goals, whether it be about writing, about your life in general, career, family, etc.

3.  Plan steps how you’ll approach #2.

One day? One week? One month? Up to you.

4.  Assess your life balance.

Overworked? Then do something about it.  Find activities to have a life, away from work. I know some people “think” that their work is life. I don’t mean that but a life away from work, like indulging in something you love to do.

5.   Continue to self-develop.

Perhaps something educational, a hobby, learning something new, etc. How about reading a good book?

6.   Enjoy doing something special.

This has got to be for yourself.

7.  Exercise and be conscious of your diet, and what you eat and drink.

8.   Do an act of kindness freely, with no thoughts of anything in return.

9.   Meditate, drift towards nature for calming effect.

Others have music appreciation, or journal-writing (no editing please.)

10.   Finish something which has been left undone out of procrastination.

For example, mine relates to articles begging to be completed four weeks back or ebooks planned two years ago.

11.   Ask guidance from God or your Higher Power.

This list varies and can change according to personal needs. The purpose is to act on your own list as a matter of priority and to break away from procrastination.

All the best.

Basic Tips to Become a Travel Writer

4 Tips on Becoming a Travel Writer

Guest Writer:  Mary Edwards

Travel writers are few and far between, let’s rephrase that…a good and paid travel writer is rare. Being a travel writer requires a lot of time and commitment. If it was an easier job, there would be more travel writers.  Foremost, the assumption is, you can write: you know the elements of writing.  Then as a travel writer, there are several things you need to consider if you are seriously interested in venturing into the writing world of travel.

Research

Start doing your homework. Read blogs, travel magazines, newspapers and books on the art form of travel writing. Visit the library. Read and keep reading. Find out about travel writers, what they say, what they do.  The more reading you do the more you get acquainted with the style of writing and what is required of travel writers.

Be different

Once you have done all your readings, you will be able to decide the places you want to focus on as a travel writer.  The best thing to do is to be you. Think of something unique in you, something you have that will reinforce yourself as a potential travel writer. Being yourself and being different from any other travel writer will make you stand out, a good sign for success.

Get online

Start getting yourself online and take advantage of available social media. Most popular are Twitter and Facebook. Start a Twitter account and/or a Facebook page and start posting.  Find others with similar interest like you, then “tweet” and “like” or “follow” other subscribers in these social media. Just be careful with identify thefts by ensuring you don’t reveal extremely confidential matters. Learn how to create a simple website or blog.  The more you get involved online the better you put your name out there.  You can also start commenting on other social networks.

Travel

If you’re not ready to travel far or your finances don’t allow, you don’t have to travel across the world to be a travel writer. You can start by writing about your city. Find something new and different in your city. Later, if you are able to travel across the world this is the best scenario!  But remember:  think outside of the box to write a great article.

You have  learned basic ideas of travel writing enough to help you decide whether travel writing is for you or not. If you honestly believe it is for you, plan your nearby travels as a start-up, prepare your travel tools and resources including a good camera, lots of pen and paper.  Start writing!  Be observant.  Take notes.  Nothing comes easy in life.  Face your mistakes, accept rejections,  but learn from them. Good luck and safe travels!
