On Becoming a Christian Writer
By Angie Lewis, Guest Writer
Ever since I can remember I wanted to be a writer. Subsequently I took a writing course from the Institute of Children’s Literature and soon there after began my journey with words and self-expression. In the beginning I would only write for myself filling up journal after journal of personal writings and self-expression. But in the year 2000, with the encouragement of my husband, Frank, we created an online marriage ministry encouraging couples in their marriage.
The first book I wrote which was chosen by a traditional publisher was Journey on the Roads Less Traveled. Journey is my personal testimony of overcoming alcoholism and getting my marriage in order through the workings of Jesus Christ. It was not until after I wrote Journey did I realize the impact that my personal experiences had on others and so began a series of self-help Christian books, all of which were self-published. My huasband is my editor and inspiration that without his support, none of this would be possible.
Do you have a story to tell? Do you have a skill that you can teach others? Do you like to tell others about your life experiences? Writing takes one skill from you, the rest can be learned, and that is your willingness to put down in words what is inside your head. To become a writer you will need some ideas, or some opinions, or perhaps some facts. You will definitely need the love of writing and the small booklet called The Elements of Style by Strunk and White.
Don’t let anyone discourage you from taking the leap from thoughts inside your head to that big novel you have always dreamed about. Go for it!
My husband and I love encouraging others to Christ through writing and offering them hope where everything can seem hopeless. In ten years, I have written 70 newsletters, 150 marriage columns, 265 articles, 10 ebooks, and 7 self-help Christian books for Heaven Ministries, an online marriage ministry. When I’m not working on the ministry, I freelance my writing services at Elance.com and also write articles for the Helium Marketplace. I’ve been published in numerous magazines online and offline.
